The Castan Centre for Human Rights Law 2014 Gala Dinner Celebrates Fight for Equal Rights

The Castan Centre for Human Rights Law held their 2014 Gala Dinner Oct. 23. The dinner, which also featured a raffle, helped the center raise money for its various projects. It also featured keynote speaker Dr. Tim Soutphommasane, who is the commissioner of the Federal Race Discrimination Commission and has dedicated his life to creating a much fairer Australia for all.

Sarah Austin, the project manager for the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, wrote more about the purpose of the event and some of the event’s history. “This dinner is a vital fundraiser for the Centre’s many policy, public education and research programs,” she wrote, adding, “Every two years about 300 members of Australia’s human rights community join us for a gala dinner and auction night.”

A ton of amazing prizes were available for auction that night. Some of the prizes auctioned included the “Misogyny” speech by Australia’s first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, signed by Gillard herself, a copy of the Australian Constitution signed by The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG, a copy of the Apology to Stolen Generations signed by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, dinner with former AFL player Darren Jolly and his wife Dee, and more.

Austin stated that promotion of the event relied mostly on email listings. “We heavily rely on our email members list as well as personal connections for an event like this,” she wrote. Thanks to the amount of contacts and interest, the event was hugely successful.

Austin wrote the event was “[f]antastic,” stating, “[W]e definitely achieved our twin goals of ensuring our guests had a fabulous night as well as fundraising for the centre.” There were several moments that made the event exceptional. “[It’s] a toss-up between the amazing view over Albert Park Lake and the Melbourne skyline from Carousel or the Keynote speech delivered by…Tim Soutphommasane,” she wrote.

If you’re holding a raffle and gala, Austin suggests to get your tickets professionally made. “Don’t manually make your raffle tickets!” she wrote. “We have done that in the past and the raffle tickets which we got [professionally] saved us so much time in the lead up to the event and made everything look so much more professional on the night.”
